Mick Ryan

We regret to announce that Mick Ryan of 71 Entry (B Sqn) passed away on 15th November 2022.

After graduating as a Senior Flight Cadet, he was posted to the Hunter OCU in Chivenor in January 1958 before going to 93 Sqn in Jever. He had instructor postings to Oxford UAS, Cranwell (Barkston Heath) and Little Rissington before being promoted to Sqn Ldr in 1965. He was OC Jet Provost Trials Unit Far East (FAC in jungle terrain) then stationed in Tengah and Butterworth before becoming OC UWAS at St Athan in 1966. An exchange tour with the Canadian Armed Forces flying the CF-5 and L-19 Bird dog preceded Staff College at Bracknell before being on the

Weapons and War Gaming research team at RARDE Fort Halstead.


Promoted to Wg Cdr in 1977, he became OC Examining Wing CFS, worked for the Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff (Communication and Information Systems) and finally part of the Airborne Software RAF Staff at MOD before retiring in 1984.


In 1985, he worked for the software company Logica as Project Manager for NATO in Brussels. In 1996 he set up his own company (Modelling and Simulation) with which he designed a Fingerprint Database System for Scotland Yard.


In 2003 he became the Director of the London Office for the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority and, having been a consultant to Illgen Simulation (bought by Northrop Grumman), in 1998 he became the Senior Scientist for Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Europe. He retired in 2010.
